The curse of Hanover Finance’s fast cars and fancy ladies appears to be haunting Terry Serepisos. The Wellington developer is understood to be seeking a buyer for his 1973 Jaguar E-type roadster, but the provenance of the car is far more interesting than any number on the clock.
Mark Hotchin originally presented the white V-12 convertible in 1999 as a wedding present to his Hanover co-owner Eric Watson. That marriage - to Nicky Watson - soured and ended in divorce in 2003, at which point Mr Watson put the Jaguar up for auction at an event for the Hanover pair’s Stand Tall charity.
Mr Watson said at the time of the auction it was officially “matrimonial property”, but his ex-wife had graciously waived any claim and allowed it to be sold. At the auction at Auckland’s Sheraton hotel, Mr Serepisos snapped up the car for $70,000 but in recent times has sought - and failed - to dispose of the Hanover convertible.
One Wellington car dealer said he was offered the car eight month ago when efforts were being made by Mr Serepisos to settle a $45,000 debt owed to a builder. That sale never went through.
And despite doubt from the dealer that the Wellington Phoenix owner would still be in possession, the Jaguar is - amongst other automotive toys owed by Mr Serepisos - once again on the block.
