Galaxy S6 date set — will it be Samsung's come-back kid?
Pressure after the S5 fell short.
Pressure after the S5 fell short.
It looks like the next version of Samsung's flagship smartphone is on the way.
Yestersday, the company sent NZ media invites to an unpacking event March 2 (or to at least to watch it live from the US, where it will be March 1).
The exact product involved is under wraps, but both NBR and others in a social media frenzy that followed assumed it would be the Galaxy S6.
Samsung's under some pressure here.
The Galaxy S5 fell 40% of the company's sales expectations.
The miss was partly self-inflicted, through setting overly-ambitious sales targets (and several execs were duly shown the door).
And it was partly a function of Apple finally releasing a big screen version of its iPhone, eliminating Samsung (and other Android phone makers') most obvious advantage. Record iPhone sales followed.
As always before any major phone release, rumours are flying. The most persistent is that the Galaxy S6 will have a metal case. I hope so. Previous models' plastic cases have undermined the Galaxy's position as a premium handset. Improving the case — rather than throwing in a kitchen sink of new interface options, which has sometimes been the case — would be a welcome move.
Stay tuned for more details March 2.
