Gapes loses supermarket challenge at Queenstown
Auckland developer Tony Gapes has lost a challenge to stop a supermarket going ahead close to where he wants to build.
The Environment Court in Queenstown has overturned a council decision and will allow a Foodstuffs supermarket to go ahead.
Foodstuffs wants to build a $30 million Pak’nSave near the airport, at Shotover Business Park next to Remarkables Park Shopping Centre.
In November 2011 a resource consent panel rejected the proposal because it is non-complying within the district plan.
So Foodstuffs appealed, represented by Jen Crawford of Anderson Lloyd.
The appeal was unsuccessfully opposed in the Environment Court by interests associated with Auckland developer Tony Gapes, who wants to build a rival Countdown supermarket at “Hendo’s Hole” next to the airport, just a kilometre away.
Several details will be negotiated before the consent is designed off.
