Dissident MP David Garrett has officially resigned from Parliament.
A spokesman for Speaker Lockwood Smith told NZPA Mr Garrett had resigned effective midnight tonight.
Dunedin-based commercial lawyer Hilary Calvert will replace Mr Garrett as an MP as she is next on the ACT list.
Mr Garrett resigned from ACT last week after telling Parliament he used the identity of a dead infant to get a false passport 26 years ago. Since then he has been under intense political pressure to resign from Parliament as well.
He was prosecuted in 2005, discharged without conviction and given permanent name suppression on the identity charges, which was lifted last week at his request.
Mr Garrett was ACT's law and order spokesman, a strong campaigner for tough sentences and an opponent of name suppression.
