GLOBAL TECH WRAP: Facebook to Notify Users When Friends are Nearby

PLUS: Edward Snowden makes his first major public appearance in Russia.

Fri, 18 Apr 2014

Facebook users will soon be able to receive notices on their mobile app when they’re near friends, reports the Wall Street Journal. The move signals an effort by the online social network to play a bigger role in real-world interactions.

Users will have to opt in separately to the feature, called “Nearby Friends,” and agree to give Facebook permission to track them at all times, even when not logged into Facebook.

The Journal also reports that Edward Snowden made his first major public appearance in Russia on Thursday on a call-in show with President Vladimir Putin, who told the fugitive ex-National Security Agency contractor that personal privacy is better protected in Russia than in the US.

The Verge takes a hands-on look at Apple's Car Play, due to be supported by displays in new vehicles from Mercedes, Volvo, Hyundai and others by year's end.
