Goff a flier to become Auckland’s next mayor
Mayor Len Brown hasn't a hope of beating Phil Goff if election held tomorrow
Roskill MP Phil Goff would blow current mayor Len Brown out of the water if the mayoralty election was held this weekend.
In a Horizon Research poll on possible mayoralty contenders, Mr Goff is the clear front-runner on 20% of the vote, while Mr Brown garners just 5% support.
Mr Goff is considering running for the mayoralty at the local body elections next year and has been vocal at protests over the city’s wharf extensions. Mr Brown indicated at the beginning of the year he was intending to seek another term, although it has been rumoured his campaign team members are advising him to quit as they won’t support him.
In the poll of about 1000 residents aged from 18 upwards in the Auckland Council area, other contenders are also far behind Mr Goff.
Former mayor John Banks has 5% support, Auckland Chamber of Commerce head Michael Barnett has 6% as does Pakuranga MP Maurice Williamson, deputy mayor Penny Hulse has 4% and councillor Cameron Brewer gets 5% support.
Just 24% of voters say they would “definitely not” vote for Mr Goff while a huge 56% say they wouldn’t vote for Mr Brown.
