Labour Party leader Phil Goff will focus on how the country is emerging from the recession in his first major political speech of the year in Hamilton today.
Mr Goff, who was re-elected unopposed in the leader role at his party's first caucus of the year on Tuesday, intended to talk about ensuring that all New Zealanders benefited from a return to growth.
He would focus on working New Zealanders and the importance of them benefiting from the recovery.
Mr Goff would talk about concerns that benefits of the economic turnaround would be sucked up by the wealthy and high income workers.
The party would fight for a more even distribution, he is expected to say.
The Labour leader would also set some bottom lines for his party's support for government tax changes -- no support for GST increases if they were going to fund cutting the top tax rate and a requirement that the tax system provide incentives for the productive sector.
The speech would also cover the need for job skills and criticise people who rip off the system, forcing others to bear the load.
