Labour leader Phil Goff will fly to Canberra tomorrow for a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

He said today he was interested in finding out what lessons could be learnt from Australia's approach to the economy.

"Australia expects to create 250,000 new jobs this year and has come through the global financial crisis in a strong position," he said.

"Our economic, political and cultural ties with Australia are very strong, and as two Labour leaders we also have strong party links."

Mr Goff will also meet Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd and other senior government figures.

Prime Minister John Key is expected to hold his first formal talks with Ms Gillard at the East Asia Summit in Vietnam at the end of this month.
