Google has launched Wallet, an app to make a phone a wallet, on Sprint in partnership with Visa, Citi, Mastercard and First Data.
Wallet is an app that allows users to make transactions using a Citi Mastercard credit card or a Google Prepaid Card, which is fundable by any credit card., Google said on its blog.
Transactions occur through Near Field Communication (NFC), a way to exchange encrypted data or complete transactions over a short distance, often used to utilise credit card information stored on NFC-enabled smartphones to pay for purchases by swiping the phone near a reader.
Visa Discover and American Express have both made available their NFC specifications, Google said, meaning their cards could be added to the app in future.
The first version of Google Wallet is available today on all Sprint Nexus S 4G phones through an over-the-air update, Google said. Early adopters of the Prepaid Card get an extra $10 if they set up in Wallet before the end of the year.
“Our goal is to make it possible for you to add all of your payment cards to Google Wallet, so you can say goodbye to even the biggest traditional wallets.”
