Labour is accusing the government of a money-go-round after it announced $55 million funding for nearly 3000 extra university places.
Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce says there is strong demand for fulltime degree study and less demand for industry-based training -- which is where the money is coming from.
Labour's tertiary education spokesman Grant Robertson said last night the Government had belatedly recognised the need for more university places but by transferring $55 million to fund them he was limiting opportunities in another field.
His colleague Carol Beaumont, spokeswoman for Labour, said all parts of the tertiary education sector played an important role in increasing skill levels.
"National has shown no commitment to industry training whatsoever," she said.
"In times of high unemployment it is even more important to invest in industry training."
