The Government is looking at giving the Teacher's Council more power to suspend law-breaking teachers, Prime Minister John Key says.

In the last two years 58 teachers have self-reported crimes punishable by more than three months in prison -- 60 percent were for drink-driving, NewstalkZB reported.

Mr Key said teachers who did something seriously wrong could be de-registered, but that was not always the best answer.

"Relative to the number of teachers teaching it's a small amount (being convicted) but I guess it's a matter that the Education Minister (Anne Tolley) has looked at," he said.

Mrs Tolley has called for an investigation.

Council director Peter Lind said he did not believe the investigation would find any surprises because all the information was already available to the minister.
