Trippy, day-glo colours will foil counterfeiters, RBNZ says.
The Reserve Bank has revealed a makeover for New Zealand's currency.
The new-look notes have feature the same mix of famous Kiwis, fauna and animals, but trippy new day-glo colours.
The RBNZ says the new brighter notes will be harder to counterfeit and easier to check.
The new notes will gradually comes into circulation from October next year, when new $5 and $10 notes will come out.
Deputy RBNZ governor Geoff Bascand says counterfeit rates are low in NZ compared to the rest of the world.
The new banknote design will keep it low by guarding against new technologies that could make it easier to copy currency, Mr Bascand says.
“Our new notes contain more sophisticated security features that greatly enhance the overall design. The transparent windows are larger, and striking holographic features will help to make the notes very easy to verify, but hard to counterfeit. Counterfeit rates are low in New Zealand compared to the rest of the world, but technology changes are making it easier and we need to stay ahead of the game,” The deputy governor says.
The new notes will be released progressively. The target date for the release of the $5 and $10 notes is October 2015, and the target date for the release of the $20, $50 and $100 is April 2016.
Both the current notes and new notes will circulate together and both sets will be legal tender.
RBNZ has put up a Brighter Money to promote the new notes.
It was playing up when NBR visited.
