A Green Party attempt to make smart electricity meters even smarter failed in Parliament tonight.

The meters are being installed by power companies and help them through remote reading, the monitoring of power consumption patterns and remote disconnection or reconnection.

The Green Party's bill would have ensured the meters could also automatically control power loads and allow consumers to use variable tariffs.

The Government wasn't interested and the bill was voted down 64-57.
