Winston Peters is “staying out of the business of government making before the election” – a statement seemingly at odds with his next promise that NZ First is “going into Opposition” after Saturday’s vote.
“We are going to the Opposition to keep an eye on things to make sure you know what’s going on,” Mr Peters told a public meeting in Rotorua this afternoon.
“We will be an effective Opposition – we will not be an obstructive one,” he promised, addressing concerns raised in electioneering by the Prime Minister that NZ First will hinder to business of government and hold parliament to ransom. John Key has said National will not work with NZ First.
Mr Peters railed against “one of the curses of the modern age is this thing called globalisation” – saying it gets “even worse when this other thing called the “market” gets caught up in this globalisation.”
Playing to his elderly constituency, he said globalisation “creates an artificial, computerised office moonscape littered with screens and paper.”
“We don’t want all these paper shufflers making a killing out of the peoples’ efforts and hardships. The sooner some political leadership realises that New Zealand is not a listed company to be taken over at rock bottom prices by their mates the better off we will all be,” he said.
His last comment was a promise to voters to just “hang in there” until Saturday as “help is on its way!”
