The Ministry of Health will cut 35 jobs by July as a result of restructuring, with another 100 jobs set to go before July 2011.
The first wave of job cuts followed a government decision on the direction of the health system and was the result of two months of consultation with staff, Director-General of Health Stephen McKernan said.
Under the cuts some positions would be disestablished, some roles would change and new positions would be created, Radio News Zealand reported.
The new structure will be in place by July 1.
The cuts will take the ministry's staffing level below a goal of 1390 full time staff and "part of the way to achieving the 1290 level" by July next year.
The restructuring sets up a National Health Board within the ministry, along with a Health, Quality and Safety Commission.
