The hi-tech marine industry could improve New Zealand's productivity, says the Productivity Commission chairman.

A report from the Productivity Commission showed New Zealanders are working more and producing less, meaning our productivity is slipping behind other OECD countries,

The Productivity Commission chairman Murray Sherwin told TV3's The Nation there was no single answer but he said the hi-tech industry could help address the issue.

"High quality people working in high quality industries that are really competitive and leading the world is how you get to higher productivity, higher incomes, and better well-being for New Zealanders."

Mr Sherwin said harnessing the hi-tech marine industry, and creating more companies like Core Builders who built much of Oracle's boat, was about big visions and strong leadership.

"Strong competitive business leaders need to get out and make the sales, and continue to develop their products and put them into the marketplace."

He said the technology and skills used in the America's cup could be applied in other areas.

"It's technology that can be applied elsewhere and you build these hubs and you have the skills agglomerating around them and then beginning to push out into other areas.

"This is an area which I think is a potential hub of activity."
