Mr Hobbs, who has been battling leukaemia for more than two years, was admitted to the hospital's intensive care unit on Wednesday.
His son Michael, who plays for the Blues in the Super 15, has flown back from South Africa to be with his father.
Widely credited as playing a key role in helping New Zealand secure the rights to host last year's Rugby World Cup, Mr Hobbs was also a director of Strategic Finance, which was placed in receivership in 2010.
The company's records are being investigated by the Financial Markets Authority.
