Jock Hobbs has resigned from his roles as chairman of the New Zealand Rugby Union and world cup organising body Rugby New Zealand 2011 to focus on his battle with cancer.
Mr Hobbs announced in May that he had been diagnosed with leukemia and would require six months of chemotherapy.
However, the NZRU confirmed today that he has now been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, “which will require a more aggressive treatment regime over an extended period of time.”
The NZRU board has appointed Mike Eagle as its chairman.
NZ Post chief executive Brian Roche is acting chair of Rugby New Zealand 2011 and the union and government will review the role.
As well as being in charge of the rugby union Mr Hobbs was also a director and former chief executive of Strategic Finance, which went into receivership in March owing $417 million.
Receivers recently painted an ugly picture for Strategic Finance investors.
