Hollywood Oscars: The envelope please

The 85th annual Academy Awards have been presented in Los Angeles.

As expected, actor-director Ben Affleck won Best Picture with Argo in Tinseltown's yearly gong fest.

The hot favourites also won the acting honours while Taiwanese director Ang Lee scored an upset win over Steven Spielberg.

Trivia facts: Daniel Day-Lewis is the only actor to have three Oscars for best actor; Argo is the first Best Picture winner without its director being nominated since Driving Miss Daisy in 1990.

The super-serious Day-Lewis cracked one of the best jokes, telling presenter Meryl Streep he was supposed to play Margaret Thatcher (in The Iron Lady) whle she was going to play Lincoln.

Argo was not rated a serious contender when it was first released in October, well before most of the others were released, and instead the major critics' awards rated Zero Dark Thirty as film of the year.

But the controversy over Affleck's failure to gain a director's nomination and Zero Dark Thirty's depiction of torture helped pull Argo through.

The four-hour plus telecast was again a marathon, ending just before midnight, Eastern standard time.
