Environment Minister Nick Smith says new regulations to see significant water users metered will not include households.
"These regulations do not cover small takes for domestic use."
All water takes of more than 20 litres a second will be metered within two years, takes of more than 10 litres a second within four years and takes of more than five litres within six years.
It would take 250 households combined to use five litres a second, a spokesman for Dr Smith said today.
That meant there was no prospect of any household having to be metered. This differed from reports last week that up to 250 houses would be metered under the new regulations.
