The first project, for which Hoyts is joining with Tainui, is due to open at Te Rapa in Hamilton in 2011.
Hoyts said the Te Rapa complex would boast the first purpose-built, fully digitalised movie venue in this country, with more than 1300 seats, six digital movie screens, a food emporium, bar, and an auditorium for large screen shows, conferences, private functions and sports entertainment.
New Hoyts general manager Brian Eldridge said there were plans to roll out more of the venues, called premium cinema concepts, and convert existing sites nationwide.
Growing competition for the leisure dollar had seen his company embark on an ambitious campaign to attract a new generation of entertainment seekers, Mr Eldridge said today.
Until the new cinema venues open, Hoyts said it was planning a series of 3D screenings for music and sports fans.
Fifa World Cup games were being scheduled for this month, and it was also planned to show a four-hour performance by bands Metallica, Slayer, Megadeath and Anthrax performing at the Sonisphere Festival Sofia in Bulgaria next month.
More live concerts were planned for the future, Mr Eldridge said.
Children's television characters are also to feature in a series of screenings during school holidays in July and October.
