As South Canterbury Finance entered the eye of the financial storm, Timaru financier Allan Hubbard wrote to the Treasury thanking it for its help.
Mr Hubbard wrote on November 10, 2009, to Treasury officials and said: "I should like to express my personal thanks for what you have done. Although I am very thankful we have apparently 'weathered the storm,' it has been a great comfort to know that your department has been there to assist in the various crises which have arisen and I, personally, am most grateful for your help."
Mr Hubbard also went on to thank two members of the cabinet who would seven months later vote to put him into statutory management: "If it is in order, I would be pleased if you could express my thanks to the Prime Minister, John Key, and Bill English, as I understand they were agreeable to helping solving the problem should that have been necessary."
The letter is one of more than 300 documents relating to South Canterbury Finance released this afternoon by the Treasury.
