UPDATED:

In the first Auckland Town Hall funeral to be held since the passing of former Prime Minister Sir Robert Muldoon, Supreme Court judge Justice Sir Robert Chambers has been farewelled by hundreds of his legal colleagues and friends, led by Chief Justice Dame Sian Elias.

In the two-hour celebration of Sir Robert’s life this afternoon, the eulogy was delivered by Chief Justice Elias.

Tributes were paid by Queen’s counsel Simon Moore, Supreme Court Justice William Young and Sir Robert’s old chambers colleague, Queen’s counsel Robert Fisher.

The judge was farewelled to the strains of two Leonard Cohen songs, Hallelujah and I’m Your Man.

Sir Robert died in his sleep last week.

Friday, May 24:

Supreme Court judge Robert Chambers, who died in his sleep on Tuesday, has been knighted posthumously from May 20.

Governor General Sir Jerry Mateparae says the appointment was approved by the Queen and would have been announced in the Queen’s Birthday honours on June 3.

Extending his sympathies to Lady Chambers (Queen’s counsel Deborah Chambers, nee Holllings), Sir Robert’s wider family, friends and colleagues, Sir Jerry says the late judge is now entitled to be referred to as Sir Robert Chambers, KNZM, QC.
