Ingram Micro has been named a co-distributor for Apple’s iPad (along with existing distributor Renaissance).
Ingram became a distributor for Apple’s Mac computers earlier this year.
iPod still out of reach
With iPhone handled by Vodafone, the conspicuous absence in Ingram’s Apple line-up is the big-selling music player
Ingram senior business manager Kelly Eyerman told NBR that the iPod was not part of her company’s line up … “yet”.
Renaissance lost its exclusive Apple agency back in 2007, but it took until April this year for the brand to appoint a second distributor.
In the meantime, Apple has also begun selling direct, with its Australasian office, based in Sydney, taking over fulfilment of online orders.
Ingram Micro NZ is New Zealand’s largest IT distribution company and a wholly-owned subsidiary of the US-based Ingram Micro. Ms Eyerman arrived from the US in April to set up Ingram’s local Apple division.
The market has long assumed Ingram will eventually gain full co-distributorship rights, and Renaissance shares (NZX: RNS) where flat at 33 cents in late trading.
Since losing its Apple exclusivity in 2007, Renaissance has made a number of moves to diversify, including its purchase of NatColl in the education sector, and Magnum Mac in retail.
The company is currently expanding its iPad development division following a deal with Penguin Group USA, and preparing to open its own retail chain.
