Private Bin understands MAF Biosecurity is now run by a man with a dog in a park near the port.
The hadda beetle, a little greebly that likes to munch on potatoes and tomatoes, has made its way into New Zealand – probably from Australia.
Private Bin heard that instead of being quickly detected by our under-resourced biosecurity team, some bugs made it through immigration and set up camp in the city.
We’re just a little perturbed that a man walking his dog near the ports of Auckland discovered the bug and not a crackshot bug assassinator checking out containers.
Private Bin thinks Biosecurity Minister David Carter should rethink staffing levels to protect the wellbeing of the people in his other portfolio – agriculture.
