Be it stage-managed hysteria, or genuinely unanticipated demand, Apple’s new tablet sold out of all stores within hours of going onsale in the US.
Based on analyst surveys, The Wall Street Journal estimated that 400,000 to 600,000 iPad 2s were sold during the gadgets first three days on sale (which included orders through Apple's website) – putting it roughly on a par with iPad 1 (which went on to sell around 15 million units over its first nine months on sale).
Apple did not offer any official sales figures.
iPad 2 is scheduled for release in 26 countries beyond the US, including New Zealand, on Friday March 25.
During its December quarter, the iPad contributed 17% of Apple’s In the most recently reported quarter ended December, the iPad contributed 17% of Apple's $US26.7 billion revenue.
