Conjecture is flying about when the iPhone 5 will be released and whether Steve Jobs’ resignation as chief executive will affect the launch of Apple’s newest iPhone.
With Apple’s announcement in June of the coming iOS 5, a new and improved mobile operating system, some analysts predicted an upgraded iPhone release, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The Journal also reported that sources had said the iPhone 5 would be coming in mid-October, to carrier Sprint Nextel Corporation, as well as Verizon Wireless and AT&T.
Meanwhile Reuters has reported that sources with knowledge of the matter said Apple’s suppliers had begun manufacturing a lower-priced version of the iPhone 4. The 8GB phone was being manufactured by a Korean company, Reuters reported.
The article also said Apple was targeting an end of September launch for a new version of the iPhone, called the iPhone 4S due to its similarity to the iPhone 4. The phone would have a bigger touch screen, better antenna and an eight megapixel camera, Reuters said.
The source said the phone’s manufacturers had been told to prepare production capacity for up to 45 million units, Reuters reported.
Apple reported third quarter results of a net profit of $7.31 billion, compared with $3.25 billion for the same quarter in 2010. The company reported sales of 20.34 million iPhones in the quarter, 142% unit growth from the 2010 quarter.
The recent resignation of Steve Jobs as chief executive has divided analysts and industry commentators, according to the International Business Times. While some say Mr Job’s resignation would delay a release of a new iPhone by several months, others say it would see release sooner than the mid-October previously reported, the IBT said.
An Apple spokeswoman told NBR the company was not making an announcement about a new iPhone.
