iPhone, iPod Touch and - especially - iPad users around the world were hoping that Apple's iOS 4.2 software update would be available for free download today.
But the update has failed to show on iTunes, so far without any explanation from Apple - although the company had never confirmed the widely reported fact that today (Friday US time) was D-Day for the much-anticipated update.

Bloggers have happily filled the information void, with one theory maintaining that a wi-fi but has delayed iOS 4.2's release. It may relate to Airprint, a wireless printing feature.
The operating system update will add new features to Apple's tablet, including the ability to multitask (switch between two programs without shutting one down), a feature already enjoyed by iPhone iOS 4 users.
iTunes does get an update
Meanwhile, an incremental iTunes update has been released today.
iTunes 10.1 brings full support for AirPlay, which allows you to stream music, video, and photos from iOS-devices or iTunes to other AirPlay-enabled devices, such as the new Apple TV and a growing array of consumer electronics and home entertainment devices, MacWorld reports.
And (just quietly), a MacWorld editor has discovered that Version 10.1 also allows you to disable Apple's Ping, a social networking feature introduced in the last iTunes upgrade.
