Clinton will stand as first female presidential nominee.
The Democratic Party today made US history by nominating Hillary Clinton to represent the party in November’s presidential election.
Mrs Clinton is the first female presidential nominee of a major political party in the nation’s history. Women only won the right to vote in US elections in 1920.
The former first lady, senator and secretary of state achieved the 2383 votes required at the recent Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Philadelphia to secure the nomination. She will formally accept it on Thursday evening (EST).
Her rival in the primary elections, Senator Bernie Sanders, brushed aside his supporters' calls for dissent by supporting Mrs Clinton.
Mr Sanders moved the procedural motion that Hillary Clinton be selected as the nominee of the Democratic Party for president of the US.
Mrs Clinton now moves on to face the Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in elections planned for November 8.
