Jetstar announced today it would add Dunedin as its latest New Zealand destination, its fifth market in the country.
From July 14, a daily Auckland - Dunedin A320 service will be in operation, which Jetstar said breaks the monopoly on a key domestic route, offering as it will fares up to 40% lower than competitors.
Special one-way sale fares from $5 from between Auckland and Dunedin will be available for one hour only online to mark the new route, today from noon at jetstar.com.
One-way JetSaver Light fares for $49 will also be on sale until midnight.
Jetstar Australia & New Zealand chief executive David Hall said the airline was growing its NZ domestic network at an important time in the New Zealand tourism industry – just ahead of the 2011 Rugby World Cup. The new fares would join Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Queenstown, the main tourism hubs.
Chief executive of Dunedin Airport John McCall said the new service would boost competitive choices for passengers and increase the number of visitors and business opportunities for the Otago and Southland region.
“We believe that Dunedin and the southern region will respond positively to the opportunity Jetstar has is offering.”
