The number of job listings in newspaper and on the internet fell slightly in September, according to the latest ANZ job advertisement series.

Total job advertisements in September this year fell 3.2% (seasonally adjusted) after a flat August (revised, s.a.). The index has now reached back to levels around May 2011 (s.a.).

The seasonally adjusted monthly decline was driven by both a 3.6% fall in internet listings, with the largest fall seen in Auckland, and a 1.6% fall in newspaper advertising with large falls in both Wellington and Auckland offset by a slight revival in Christchurch).

The level of total job advertisements may have fallen over the last couple of months, but they have been recorded as being 17% higher than in 2010.

Canterbury has stood out amongst most other New Zealand regions with a rebound in total job advertisements in both newspaper and internet listings of 8.4% in September, exactly unwinding the August (s.a.) drop.

It still seems to be unclear whether the decrease in September’s total job listings is related to the job market being on hold due to the Rugby World Cup buzz, or whether employers are staying safe surrounding the ever-ongoing economic crisis.
