Cabinet minister Nikki Kaye has announced she is taking leave from her ministerial portfolios following diagnosis of breast cancer.

According to a post on her Facebook page, the minister for Civil Defence, ACC, and Youth was informed of her condition on Friday, at which point she informed Prime Minister John Key.

Acting ministers have been appointed to cover Ms Kaye’s portfolios: Gerry Brownlee as Minister of Civil Defence, Nathan Guy as Minister for ACC and Anne Tolley as Minister for Youth.

A statement from Mr Key says they will retain these temporary responsibilities “until she is able to return to her role.”

Ms Kaye became an MP following her defeat of Labour MP Judith Tizard for the Auckland Central seat – held by left-wing parties for nine decades – in what was considered one of the biggest upsets of the November 2008 election.

She became a cabinet minister in the last year of her second term, picking up the portfolios of food safety, civil defence and youth affairs and being made associate minister of education and immigration as part of a pre-election cabinet refresh.

After being re-elected for a third term she added ACC to her portfolios, while retaining all but food safety.
