The tax package Labour is to announce on Thursday would result in lower taxes for most New Zealanders if Labour were to win November's election, Labour leader Phil Goff told reporters this afternoon.
Mr Goff said not only would the package deliver a fairer tax system, most people would be better off under it as part of Labour policy was to introduce a tax-free zone for the first $5000 of income.
The package would show that Labour was not a tax and spend party, he said.
Rather, money would be used to pay down debt, Mr Goff said.
However, he would not confirm whether a capital gains tax was part of the package.
Discussion and debate during the last week over Labour's tax policy was healthy and not unhelpful, he said.
“People are starting to look at what's wrong with the taxation system,” he said.
