Kordia is offering Aucklanders 15 minutes' free access to its Metro WiFi network today.
The state-owned networking operator and broadcast infrastructure said it wants to get office workers out into the sun, and encourage them to hold meetings in cafes (participating outlets are listed here).
Don't walk on; buy
Kordia is also no doubt looking to pick up interest in its wireless network, whose traffic so far is modest.
"We get around 3000 paid-for sessions each month," a spokeswoman told NBR this morning.
"Around 60,000 unique devices 'see' our network each month but do not necessarily buy a service. That is, unique wi-fi enabled devices that associate with a node – maybe because the user is walking past."
Once your 15 minutes are up, Kordia has a range of Metro WiFi plans, from $9.95 for 24 hours' uncapped use to $79.95 for one gigabyte of data.
In Auckland, Kordia's Metro WiFi network covers parts of the CBD, Viaduct and various locations around Ponsonby, Parnell and Newmarket.
Wellington's council recently released an RFP for broadening free wi-fi for the capital beyond a pilot area on the waterfront.
Kordia has no involvement with the current Wellington network but is looking at the RFP.
"It would be fantastic if Auckland followed suit," the spokeswoman said.
