I grew up in dark and ignorant times in Rangiora, North Canterbury. I remember questioning my Dad about the dishevelled man we saw shuffling through the streets of Christchurch. 

My Dad said that the man was a deadbeat. Dad didn’t know any better.

We now know the man was simply homeless.
