Spark-owned Lightbox has added support for Google's Chromecast widget and Panasonic Smart TVs to its device line-up.
The $60 Chromecast streaming media player gives subscribers a wireless way to get Lightbox on to any modern TV screen with an HDMI port. Lightbox is now also available on selected Panasonic VIERA Smart TVs (for 2014 and 2015 models; rival Quickflix boasts it supports 2011 to 2015 VIERAs).
Chromecast is a small device that plugs in to the HDMI input on your TV and uses your home wi-fi network to stream video content. Using the Lightbox app on an Android phone or tablet or Lightbox’s iOS app for iPhone or iPad, users can cast Lightbox shows direct to the big screen.
Lightbox chief executive Kym Niblock says: “We’ve streamed the equivalent of 7.4 million hours of TV since launching. It’s clear our viewing habits are changing, as many New Zealanders are now watching their TV via the internet. We know our customers love watching Lightbox on the big screen. We’ve seen big-screen viewing increase by more than 400% since we launched our first Smart TV app last November. Adding Chromecast and Panasonic means we can put Lightbox into the homes and onto the big screens of even more TV lovers, and it’s perfectly timed to provide great TV options during the cold winter months ahead.”
Lightbox is already available through Samsung Smart TVs, desktop PCs, laptops, Android tablets and phones, iPads and iPhones and via Apple TV (with Airplay, it has no Apple TV app) plus PlayStation4 and PlayStation3 consoles.
The streaming video service is playing catch-up with Netflix NZ, which is the market leader in device support, including Xbox, all major brands of Smart TV and a native app on the invitation-only Apple TV. Quickflix is a close second, with Lightbox gaining ground in third. Sky TV's Neon currently has the most limited device support.
