UPDATED:  Orcon has signed M&C Saatchi as its new advertising agency.

NBR reported that DraftFCB resigned the account earlier this year, reportedly to pitch for Vodafone, and Orcon has been mum about the pitch process so far.

But today M&C Saatchi was announced as the telco’s new full service advertising agency, set to launch a new campaign in the New Year.

Orcon general manager retail Taryn Hamilton said the agency was chosen on the merit of the team’s creative thinking and team focus.

“We’re all about innovation, challenging the market, and M&C really showed they understood where we are coming from, and how to help drive our business forward.”

He said it had been a competitive three way pitch and M&C Saatchi had impressed Orcon the most.

Mr Hamilton said the focus of the campaign next year was confidential.

M&C Saatchi chief executive Darryn Melrose said the agency had admired the Orcon brand for a number of years for its innovative and interesting work previously and their position in the telco sector as good customer service providers.

Mr Melrose said it had been one of the more enjoyable pitches of his career as Orcon had focussed on four or five key questions and gone into depth with them.  The pitch had run for about five weeks, he said.

"It's been a really good process to work on...pitches are interesting because what you're trying to do is find a long term relationship partner.  A lot of pitches are run kind of like a 100 metre sprint and you don't always end up with the best long term agency."

He said M&C Saatchi's focus on delivering business results had been important.

"Great creative can't just be great on its own stack it's also got to really deliver returns."
