South Canterbury Finance chief executive Sandy Maier has taken a new appointment on the board of Ngāi Tahu Holdings Corporation.
It is not Mr Maier’s first involvement with the South Island tribe. He is chairman of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu’s investment advisory sub-committee.
In a role that has some parallels with his work at South Canterbury Finance, this subcommittee has helped provide direction on how the iwi’s assets should be managed.
He will resign from this role to take up the new position.
Mr Maier replaces Donald Couch who resigned from the Ngai Tahu board in October 2009. Mr Couch retains other boardroom posts and was more recently took a job as one of the government-appointed commissioners on Environment Canterbury, replacing elected councillors. His commissioner role is to represent Ngai Tahu interests on the regional council.
Mr Maier also retains various other directorships including chair of Learning Media, and director on Radius Property, Pathfinder Asset Management, Oyster BayVineyard and the Australasian printing group, GEON.
Ngai Tahu chairman Trevor Burton welcomed Mr Couch and his 35-year’s experience. Mr Maier has enjoyed investment banking positions in New Zealand and overseas including with Citicorp/Citibank for 15 years, and in management positions in Jamaica, Brazil, the United States and Australasia.
For a number of years he was the statutory manager of DFC New Zealand. He also has his own consulting firm specialising in corporate strategy and governance, and financial and human resource issues.
In December 2009 he was appointed chief executive officer of South Canterbury Finance.
