Labour MP Trevor Mallard's bid in Parliament to have tomorrow declared a public holiday to mark the feats of soccer's All Whites was today red carded in 15 seconds.

Mr Mallard sought permission to introduce his bill and for Parliament to set aside an hour to debate and pass it.

Under the rules, an objection from any MP is enough to block the procedure, and there were plenty of them from the government benches.

Mr Mallard wanted a public holiday to mark the All White's match against Paraguay, which takes place in the early tomorrow morning, and previously suggested a lot of people would be off work anyway after staying up to watch it.

As stunts go, it wasn't a bad one, although he earlier admitted he didn't think it had much chance of succeeding.
