A man has been arrested by Palmerston North police for allegedly stealing wifi, NZ City reported.
Apparently the man had been displaying suspicious behaviour around Summerhill Drive in the weekend and police were alerted, said senior sergeant Phil Skoglund, and was found with various technical devices in his car.
The man has been charged with accessing computer systems without authorisation. NZ City reports that this could carry a maximum penalty of two years jail if convicted.
The incident recalls a 2007 parliamentary debate, during which then communications minister David Cunliffe tabled a blog post by technology journalist Chris Keall, detailing the free wi-fi enjoyed by one member of opposition leader John Key's family - courtesy of its its neighbours' lax security.
