McCullum hits triple century, tributes flow
One of the more unlikely congratulatory messages comes from CNN's Piers Morgan.
Brendon McCullum has scored the first test triple century by a New Zealand cricketer.
The Black Caps captain scored 302 at the Basin Reserve against India, slashing a four to pass Martin Crowe’s 299 – made against Sri Lanka, in 1991, at the same ground.
McCullum, who scored 224 in the first test at Eden Park, was out two balls later, caught behind by MS Dhoni off Zaheer Khan's bowling.
Yesterday, Crowe had been urging McCullum to break his record.
Tributes are already flowing on Twitter, including from All Black Dan Carter, former cricket international Scott Styris, and the obligatory political piggyback from Labour MP Grant Robertson.
There's even a mention by Piers Morgan, the CNN presenter who was controversially battered in the nets by Australian pace bowler Brett Lee during the recent Ashes series.
“BOOM! First 300 in New Zealand test cricket history – fantastic batting by #mccullum,” Morgan tweeted.
McCullum’s milestone overshadowed James Neesham’s century on debut.
The captain’s knock has turned the test.
Starting the second innings 246 behind, and teetering at 94/5, New Zealand now has a lead of almost 400 runs on the fifth and final day.
New Zealand drew the Basin Reserve test and won the series, 1-0.
