Foreign Minister Murray McCully could meet Commodore Voreqe (Frank) Bainimarama in Hong Kong in March but Prime Minister John Key says he has no plans for top level talks with Fiji's self-appointed prime minister.
Mr McCully is visiting China and Hong Kong in March, and might go to the Hong Kong Sevens between March 26 and 28.
Cdre Bainimarama also plans to go to the sevens and it is understood a meeting might be arranged.
"I have no plans to meet him at this time," Mr Key said today at his post-cabinet press conference.
"Whether the commodore meets up with Murray McCully at the Hong Kong Sevens, I don't know.
"I understand they're both going to be there, which is a spooky coincidence, but I certainly don't have any plans to meet him."
A spokesman for Mr McCully said whether the minister went to the sevens depended on his tight itineraries in China and Hong Kong.
New Zealand and Fiji are in the process of rebuilding diplomatic representation and dialogue after years of strained relations.
Mr McCully announced on Saturday officials had returned to diplomatic missions in Wellington and Suva, which had come to a virtual standstill.
