Most New Zealanders are optimistic about the year ahead but they aren't as enthusiastic as they were a year ago, a survey released today shows.

The UMR Mood of the Nation survey found 62% expect 2011 to be better than 2010 and 23% expect it to be worse -- a net optimism of plus 9. That compares with a net optimism of plus 48 recorded at the end of last year.

Expectations about the economy revealed 52% thought it would improve in the year ahead, lower than the 60% who held that view a year ago.

There was an improvement in the anticipated outlook for unemployment -- a year ago 50% thought it would increase but that has dropped to 41%.

The survey showed that throughout this year most people were feeling consistently buoyant about the direction of the country.

At the beginning this year, 61% thought it was heading in the right direction and at the year end figure was 62%.

The UMR survey, taken throughout the year, questioned 750 people aged 18 or over. It had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1%.
