Three new members' bills were drawn from the ballot today.
Safe and secure rental properties, lost property sales and foreign ownership of land are all topics that will soon be debated in Parliament after the corresponding private member’s bills were pulled from the ballot.
The ballot involves drawing numbered tokens from a container, with one token drawn for each available bill to enter on Parliament's agenda (the order paper.)
The first bill relates to the foreign ownership of land register.
Put forward by NZ First list MP Mahesh Bindra, the Land Transfer Amendment Bill would ensure a comprehensive register of all foreign-owned New Zealand land is compiled and made available to the general public.
The second bill selected was the Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill.
If passed, it would amend the Residential Tenancies Act of 1986 to strengthen tenants’ rights and promote secure, long-term tenancies. It was put forward by Green party co-leader Metiria Turei.
The third bill, put forward by National party list member Tutehounuku Korako, relates to publicising lost property sales.
If passed, it would amend the Airport Authorities Act 1966 to provide airport authorities with greater flexibility when publicising the disposal of lost property.
