Wellington International Airport chief quits for a job in Sydney
Wellington International Airport chief executive Steven Fitzgerald – who drove the airport’s controversial Wellywood sign campaign – has quit the airport for a new role in Sydney.
Mr Fitzgerald is moving to a full-time position with HRL Morrison & Co – the investment management company that manages Wellington Airport’s major shareholder Infratil.
The Sydney-based role will see him responsible for airport investment.
Mr Fitzherald, who has resigned after three years in the role, will remain on the Board of Wellington Airport, but will pass on his local chief executive responsibilities to the airport’s chief operating officer John Howarth on August 8.
Mr Howarth will fill the role while the company searches internationally for the next chief executive.
Wellington International Airport chairman David Newman said Mr Fitzgerald would be missed, but the airport was pleased he would be playing a greater role in Infratil’s airport investment.
Last month the airport grounded plans to build a Wellywood sign on a nearby hill following a strong backlash.
The airport's 2011 report lists its highest paid employee - presumably Mr Fitzgerald - a being paid $330,000 - $340,000.
