National has a lead over Labour of more than 20 points in the latest opinion poll, recording its best result since February.
The TV3 survey showed National at 55.5 percent support, up 1.7 points since the last poll, with Labour down 1.4 points to 31.2 percent.
National's support level would give it 68 seats in Parliament if an election was held now, enough to govern alone.
The Greens were steady on 7.3 percent, ACT improved slightly to 1.3 percent, the Maori Party was on 1.7 percent, New Zealand First on 1.9 and United Future on 0.1 percent.
In the preferred prime minister stakes, John Key scored 54.1 percent against Labour leader Phil Goff's 6.8 percent.
Mr Goff's rating was only just ahead of former prime minister Helen Clark, who hasn't been in Parliament for two years.
Mr Key said the poll was a great way to go into Christmas.
"It shows that the public are supporting the direction we're taking the country in," he said.
Mr Key said Mr Goff was facing "a real challenge" and he wouldn't be surprised if Labour's caucus dumped him in the new year.
Mr Goff said he wasn't going to stand down.
"I'm working hard, doing the job, and getting a good response around the country," he said.
TV3 polls usually question about 1000 voters and have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percent.
