Deputy Prime Minister Bill English said National would not support Sir Roger Douglas' private member's bill to get rid of tariffs on imports.

Sir Roger's Tariff Act 1988 Repeal Bill would allow imports without the payment of tariffs as prescribed in the 1988 Act.

Mr English said the government's position on tariffs was to "gradually wind them down -- what's left of them".

"We're not planning to change that position," he told reporters today.

"We haven't considered the whole thing in detail just that we've made a decision...and we're going to stick to it."

The bill was drawn out of the ballot on April 22.
