National MP Allan Peachey has died after a battle with cancer.

Mr Peachey, a long standing school principal, was the electorate MP for Tamaki. Last month he said he would not stand in this month's election because of health reasons. Simon O'Connor was picked as his successor to contest the Tamaki seat. The east Auckland electorate has been a safe National seat since 1960.

He entered parliament in 2005 after a 30+ year career in education, including a stint as principal of Auckland's Rangitoto College, New Zealand's largest school. Between 1998 and 2000 he was also president of the Secondary Principals’ Association.

Mr Peachey is survived by his wife and four children.

Prime Minister John Key is on the election trail in New Plymouth today, where he told reporters: "It was with sadness that he stood down just as we went into the election period with the knowledge that he was very very unwell. It's just tragic he's been robbed of that further time spent with his family."

He also released a consolence statement saying acknowleding Mr Peachey's work as chairman of Parliament’s education and science select committee over the past three years.”

“Despite suffering ill-health in recent years, Allan was committed to continue doing his job and represent the people of Tamaki. He showed determination and courage to keep carrying out his role in the face of illness. My condolences and thoughts go out to Allan’s family, friends and colleagues at this time. My intention is to attend Allan’s funeral later this week.”
