Netflix has increased the price of its “standard” plan in the US by $US1 to $US9.99 for new customers.

It is the most popular plan, ahead of the cheaper “basic” plan at $US7.99 a month and in between the more expensive “premium” plan at $US11.99 a month. The standard and premium plans allow high definition streaming and viewing on multiple devices simultaneously.

The New Zealand equivalent of the "standard" plan is priced at $12.99, which hasn’t changed since the service launched in March.

Lightbox (owned by Spark) is also $12.99 per month while Neon (owned by Sky TV) is $20 a month.

“To continue adding more TV shows and movies including many Netflix original titles, we are modestly raising the price for some new members in the US, Canada and Latin America,” Netflix says.

“As a thank you to existing Netflix members, we will maintain their current price for a year.”

The company’s stock rose 6.36% to $US114.97 in last day’s trading.

Correction: an earlier version of this article stated Lightbox costs $15 per month.
