Superintendent Mike Bush will be the new deputy commissioner of police operations, Police Minister Judith Collins announced today.

Mr Bush has been the district commander for the Counties-Manukau police district since 2008 and has also held a wide range of positions including officer in charge of Interpol at police national headquarters in 1995.

Between 2003 and 2007 he served as New Zealand police liaison officer for South East Asia, based in Bangkok.

He has been appointed for a five-year term and will succeed Rob Pope whose term expires next week.

Mr Pope announced his resignation in January after a damning report on police culture.

Mr Bush will begin the job alongside new Police Commissioner Peter Marshall, who begins his role on Monday.
